On the Easel

This is where you can have a sneak preview of my latest paintings as they take shape on the easel.  Keep checking back for updates!

Stagecoach 1

Here I have blocked in the background of the desert scenery and roughly sketched in the stagecoach and team of six horses, galloping to escape an ambush by Indians.

Stagecoach 2

Here I have continued to work on the detail of the attacking Indians and the horses pulling the coach.  I decided to tone down the background colours a little to give more depth to the picture.

Stagecoach 3

Sometimes it's useful to view the painting as a monochrome image to see how the tonal values work against each other, and whether they need adjusting for a better effect.

  1. After reading the powerfully moving "First Light" by Battle of Britain fighter pilot, Squadron Leader Geoffrey Wellum, DFC, I wanted to paint another Spitfire picture.  The descriptions of sunsets set me thinking of a pilot returning to base alone, after the turmoil of battle, heading towards the setting sun.

Just blocking in the basic sunset colours here:-

Now to complete the sky and paint the thin, hazy clouds below, tinged by the fiery sunset:-

The next step is to position the plane and roughly block in the colours:-
